- at least one opening in the main body, the opening providing access to at least one compartment.

- providing the modular compartment pillow having a main body, a plurality of compartments housed in a cavity in the main body, and at least one opening, the opening providing access to at least one compartment;
- layering one or more inserts;
- placing the one or more inserts into a corresponding compartment;
- and
- adjusting a firmness of each compartment by changing the amount and type of insert in each compartment.
