Abstract
Virtual reality (VR) systems and methods for treating eating disorders or training a patient to have beneficial eating habits. Systems includes a virtual reality interface displayed to a patient and a computing system coupled to the virtual reality interface. The computing system executes instructions to evaluate a patient eating disorder based upon patient input and to construct and display a therapeutic VR environment, where the patient can be treated for the eating disorder and trained to have beneficial eating habits.
Claims36
A system comprising:
- a virtual reality device configured to display a virtual reality interface to a patient;
- a computing system coupled to the virtual reality device, the computing system comprising:
- a) a processor;
- and
- b) a computer readable medium in communication with the processor, the computer readable medium having encoded thereon a set of instructions executable by the processor to:
- 1) accept an input of one or more patient eating behaviors;
- 2) evaluate the input of one or more patient eating behaviors to determine a patient eating disorder;
- 3) determine a target eating behavior based, at least in part, on the patient eating disorder;
- 4) generate a virtual scenario for training the patient to accomplish the target eating behavior;
- 5) present the virtual scenario to the patient through the virtual reality interface, wherein the virtual scenario allows the patient to virtually accomplish the target eating behavior;
- 6) monitor one or more patient actions within the virtual scenario through the virtual reality interface;
- and
- 7) provide real-time feedback to the patient, through the virtual reality interface, based on the one or more patient actions within the virtual scenario, said real-time feedback being configured to encourage the target eating behavior.
A method comprising:
- a) using a computing system to evaluate an input of one or more patient eating behaviors;
- b) determining, with the computing system, a patient eating disorder based at least in part upon the input;
- c) determining, with the computing system, a target eating behavior based, at least in part, upon the patient eating disorder;
- d) generating, with the computing system, a virtual scenario for training the patient to accomplish the target eating behavior;
- e) presenting the virtual scenario to the patient, through a virtual reality interface, wherein the virtual scenario allows the patient to interact virtually with the computing system to virtually accomplish the target eating behavior;
- f) monitoring, through the virtual reality interface, one or more patient actions within the virtual scenario;
- and
- g) providing real-time feedback to the patient, through the virtual reality interface, based upon the one or more patient actions within the virtual scenario, said feedback being configured to encourage the target eating behavior.
An apparatus, comprising:
- a) at least one processor;
- and
- b) a non-transitory computer readable medium communicatively coupled to the at least one processor, the non-transitory computer readable medium having stored thereon computer software comprising a set of instructions that, when executed by the at least one processor, causes the apparatus to:
- 1) accept an input of one or more patient eating behaviors;
- 2) evaluate the input of one or more patient eating behaviors to determine a patient eating disorder;
- 3) determine a target eating behavior based, at least in part, on the determined patient eating disorder;
- 4) generate a virtual scenario for training a patient to accomplish the target eating behavior;
- 5) present the virtual scenario to the patient, wherein the virtual scenario allows the patient to virtually accomplish the target eating behavior;
- 6) monitor one or more patient actions within the virtual scenario;
- and
- 7) provide real-time feedback to the patient based on the one or more patient actions within the virtual scenario, said feedback being configured to encourage the target eating behavior.
