## Abstract

A method including the steps of providing fluid through an inlet into a vessel at atmospheric pressure. The method further includes passing the fluid through a filtration unit utilizing a downstream pump, the filtration unit creating a flux of less than or equal to about 0.05 gallons per minute per square foot (GPM/ft2), and moving the fluid processed by the filtration unit through an outlet of the vessel.

## Claims

### Claim 1

A method of separating particles from a fluid, the method comprising:
providing fluid through an inlet into a vessel at atmospheric pressure;
passing the fluid through a filtration unit utilizing a downstream pump, the filtration unit creating a flux of less than or equal to about 0.05 gallons per minute per square foot (GPM/ft2);
moving the fluid processed by the filtration unit through an outlet of the vessel; and
moving the fluid through at least one of a coalescer or an absorption bed after moving the fluid out of the vessel.

### Claim 2 (depends on 1)

The method of claim 1, further including the step of aerating the fluid in the vessel with an aerator.

### Claim 3 (depends on 1)

The method of claim 1, further including the step of reversing a direction of fluid flow during a backpulsing operation.

### Claim 4 (depends on 1)

The method of claim 1, further including the step of moving the fluid past a weir, the weir spaced apart from the inlet.

### Claim 5 (depends on 1)

The method of claim 1, wherein the vessel has an internal chamber and wherein the fluid is a pre-separated fluid supplied from a remote location and the pre-separated fluid contains oil.

### Claim 6 (depends on 1)

The method of claim 1, wherein the filtration unit includes a plurality of filtration packs each having a plurality of filter elements.

### Claim 7 (depends on 6)

The method of claim 6, wherein at least one of the plurality of filter elements includes filter media with a pore size between about 1 and about 500 micrometers.

### Claim 8 (depends on 6)

The method of claim 6, wherein at least one of the plurality of filtration packs has an end cap designed to maintain spacing and alignment of the plurality of filter elements.

### Claim 9 (depends on 6)

The method of claim 6, wherein the filtration unit comprises a control system having at least one sensor to monitor a level of fluid within the vessel.

### Claim 10 (depends on 1)

The method of claim 1, wherein the downstream pump is positioned on a pump skid and the pump skid includes at least one additional pump. having:

### Claim 11

A method of separating particles from a fluid, the method comprising:
providing fluid through an inlet into a vessel at atmospheric pressure;
passing the fluid through a filtration unit utilizing a downstream pump, the filtration unit having:
a filtration pack comprising a plurality of filter elements having a plurality of outlets on a first end of the plurality of filter elements,
a single manifold having a plurality of inlets, and
a frame for holding the filtration pack, the frame including an end cap structure comprising a plurality of alignment structures, wherein the plurality of outlets are aligned with the plurality of inlets; and
moving the fluid through the plurality of outlets into the single manifold.

### Claim 12 (depends on 11)

The method of claim 11, further including the step of determining a level of the fluid in the vessel.

### Claim 13 (depends on 11)

The method of claim 11, wherein each of the plurality of alignment structures corresponds to one of the plurality of filter elements and holds at least one end of the corresponding filter element.

### Claim 14 (depends on 11)

The method of claim 11, further including the step of determining a pressure in a transfer line that is fluidly coupled to at least one of the plurality of inlets.

The method of claim 11, further including the steps of:
sensing a first flow rate of fluid through a first transfer line fluidly coupled to the inlet of the vessel; and
sensing a second flow rate of fluid through a second transfer line fluidly coupled to at least one of the plurality of outlets.

### Claim 16 (depends on 15)

The method of claim 15, further including the steps of:
receiving feedback from at least one of the first flow rate and the second flow rate; and
