Abstract
Among other things, an imaging device has a photosensitive array of pixels, and a surface associated with the array is configured to receive a specimen with at least a part of the specimen at a distance from the surface equivalent to less than about half of an average width of the pixels.

(canceled)
An apparatus comprising:
- a two-dimensional array of photosensitive elements;
- a light source configured to illuminate a specimen with light having a first wavelength for imaging by the two-dimensional array of photosensitive elements;
- a surface arranged to receive the specimen with at least a portion of the specimen within a distance from the two-dimensional array of photosensitive elements that is less than ten times the first wavelength;
- and
- one or more microlenses between the specimen and the photosensitive elements.

An apparatus comprising:
- an imaging sensor comprising an array of photosensitive pixels;
- a specimen surface at or adjacent to the array of photosensitive pixels, the specimen surface configured to receive a specimen for imaging by the imaging sensor;
- a cover opposing the specimen surface, the cover defining a chamber for the specimen between the cover and the specimen surface;
- and
- one or more electrodes arranged to contact the specimen when the specimen is disposed on the specimen surface, the one or more electrodes configured to apply a potential to the specimen.
