Enhanced in-band activation and provisioning of devices for openroaming networks

A computer-readable storage medium comprising instructions to cause processing circuitry of a station device (STA), upon execution of the instructions by the processing circuitry, to:

• generate, during a pre-provisioning process, an activation profile on the STA for one-time use with OpenRoaming networks;
• identify, after the pre-provisioning process, a first OpenRoaming network within range of the STA;
• transmit, to a first access point (AP), a first authentication request for the first OpenRoaming network, the first authentication request comprising an indication of the activation profile;
• identify a first authentication response received from the first AP, the first authentication request granting access of the STA to the first OpenRoaming network;
• and
• access the first OpenRoaming network based on the first authentication response.

A method for using OpenRoaming networks, the method comprising:

• generating, by processing circuitry of a station device (STA), during a pre-provisioning process, an activation profile on the STA for one-time use with OpenRoaming networks;
• identifying, by the processing circuitry, after the pre-provisioning process, a first OpenRoaming network within range of the STA;
• transmitting, by the processing circuitry, to a first access point (AP), a first authentication request for the first OpenRoaming network, the first authentication request comprising an indication of the activation profile;
• identifying, by the processing circuitry, a first authentication response received from the first AP, the first authentication request granting access of the STA to the first OpenRoaming network;
• and
• accessing, by the processing circuitry, the first OpenRoaming network based on the first authentication response.
