Abstract
A torsional damping system includes a housing having an interior space. An inertia ring is located in the interior space, and a torsion fluid is located between the inertia ring and the housing. The inertia ring is rotatably installed relative to the housing. As the housing oscillates, the inertia ring damps at least a portion of the oscillation. The torsional damping system may be included in a downhole tool or bottomhole assembly, and used to damp oscillations along a drill string or along the bottomhole assembly, including between a downhole motor and a cutting tool.
Claims22
A downhole inertia damping system, comprising:
- a collar;
- and
- a plurality of dampers coupled to the collar, each damper of the plurality of dampers including:
- an inertia element;
- and
- a torsion fluid around the inertia element.
(canceled)
A downhole inertia damping system, comprising:
- a collar positioned axially between a downhole tool and a bit;
- a plurality of dampers coupled to the collar, the plurality of dampers including at least one housing coupled to the collar, and each damper including:
- an inertia element positioned inside the housing, the at least one inertia element being rotatable within and relative to the housing;
- and
- a torsion fluid contained within the housing and in contact with the inertia element.
A method for damping oscillations, comprising:
- rotating a collar downhole, the collar including a plurality of dampers connected to the collar;
- and
- in response to rotating the collar, rotating a plurality of inertia elements, each inertia element being located inside of a housing of each damper of the plurality of dampers out of sync with the rotation of the collar.
