Abstract
Disclosed herein are methods for making asymmetric laminate structures and methods for reducing bow in asymmetric laminate structures, the methods comprising subjecting the laminate structures to at least one thermal cycle comprising cooling the laminate structures to a first temperature near or below room temperature and heating the laminate structures to a second temperature near or below the lamination temperature. Also disclosed herein are laminate structures made according to such methods.
Claims15
A method for making a laminate structure, comprising:
- positioning an interlayer between a first glass substrate having a thickness of between 3 mm to 10 mm;
- and a second glass substrate having a thickness of 0.3 mm to not greater than 2 mm to form a stack,
- wherein the interlayer has a Young's modulus of greater than or equal to 15 MPa to not greater than or equal to 250 MPa;
- is chosen from polyvinyl butyral, ethylene-vinyl acetate, thermoplastic polyurethane, and ionomers,
- wherein a coefficient of thermal expansion of the first substrate is higher than a coefficient of thermal expansion of the second substrate;
- heating the stack to a lamination temperature ranging from wherein the lamination temperature ranges from 120° C. to 160° C. to form a laminate structure;
- and
- subjecting the laminate structure to at least one thermal cycle, the thermal cycle comprising:
- cooling the laminate structure to a first temperature ranging from −20° C. to 35° C.
- holding the laminate structure at the first temperature for a first time period ranging from 30 minutes to 4 hours,
- heating the laminate structure at a ramp rate ranging 0.1° C./min to 2° C./min to a second temperature below the lamination temperature, the second temperature ranging from 50° C. to 120° C.,
- holding the laminate structure at the second temperature for a second time period ranging from 30 minutes to 4 hours;
- wherein, via the thermal cycle, an asymmetrical laminate having a radius of that is greater than the maximum dimension of the laminate structure.
