## Abstract

Provided is an electric power assist device for bicycles, which can achieve proper power assist control in response to the pedaling force without any complicated feature for detecting pedaling forces and any necessity of modification to a bicycle. The device comprises: a pedaling force estimator 154 configured to estimate a pedaling force put on each pedal of a bicycle based on a variation between average current levels I flowing in an electric motor 58 measured within a first crank rotational angle range A and a second crank rotational angle range B which is different from the first crank rotational angle range; and a crank rotational angle adjuster 152 configured to adjust the first crank rotational angle range A and the second crank rotational angle range B according to the gradient of a road on which the bicycle is traveling.

## Claims

### Claim 1

An electric power assist device for bicycles, wherein a bicycle is provided with a crankshaft configured to be driven by a pedaling force transmitted from a pedal via a crankarm, the electric power assist device comprising:
an electric motor connected to the crankshaft or the crankarm of the bicycle in a torque transmitting relationship; and
a control unit configured to control the electric motor,
wherein the control unit comprises:
a pedaling force estimator configured to estimate a pedaling force put on each pedal of the bicycle based on a variation between measurements measured at a first crank rotational angle and a second crank rotational angle which is different from the first crank rotational angle, the measurements being indicative of at least one of a current level flowing in the electric motor, an angular velocity level of the crankshaft, and an angular acceleration level of the crankshaft;
a crank rotational angle adjuster configured to adjust at least one of the first crank rotational angle and the second crank rotational angle according to at least one of a gradient level of a road on which the bicycle is traveling, a velocity level of the bicycle, an angular velocity level of the crankshaft, and an angular acceleration level of the crankshaft; and
a motor drive controller configured to control the electric motor based on the pedaling force estimated by the pedaling force estimator.

### Claim 2 (depends on 1)

The electric power assist device according to claim 1, wherein the crank rotational angle adjuster adjusts the first crank rotational angle and the second crank rotational angle such that, when the road on which the bicycle is traveling is flat, the first and second crank rotational angles are set to respective default angles, which are first and second default angles, respectively;
that, when the bicycle is traveling on a descending slope, the greater the gradient level of the descending slope is, the more the first and second crank rotational angles are lag-shifted from the first and second default angles, respectively; and
that, when the bicycle is traveling on an ascending slope, the greater the gradient level of the ascending slope is, the more the first and second crank rotational angles are lead-shifted from the first and second default angles, respectively.

### Claim 3 (depends on 1)

The electric power assist device according to claim 1, wherein the crank rotational angle adjuster adjusts the first crank rotational angle and the second crank rotational angle such that, when one of the velocity level of the bicycle, the angular velocity level of the crankshaft, and the angular acceleration level of the crankshaft is in a corresponding predetermined reference range, the first and second crank rotational angles are set to respective default angles, which are first and second default angles, respectively;
that the more the one of the velocity level of the bicycle, the angular velocity level of the crankshaft, and the angular acceleration level of the crankshaft exceeds the corresponding predetermined reference range, the more the first and second crank rotational angles are lead-shifted from the first and second default angles, respectively; and
that the more the one of the velocity level of the bicycle, the angular velocity level of the crankshaft, and the angular acceleration level of the crankshaft falls behind the corresponding predetermined reference range, the more the first and second crank rotational angles are lag-shifted from the first and second default angles, respectively.

### Claim 4 (depends on 2)

The electric power assist device according to claim 2, wherein the first default angle is within an angle range between 0 and 90 degrees from a crank rotational angle at which one pedal is at the highest position, and the second default angle is within an angle range between 90 and 180 degrees from the crank rotational angle at which the one pedal is at the highest position.

### Claim 5 (depends on 1)

The electric power assist device according to claim 1, wherein the pedaling force estimator estimates the pedaling force based on a variation between first and second averages of the measurements measured within first and second crank rotational angle ranges, respectively, the second crank rotational angle range being different from the first crank rotational angle range, wherein the first and second crank rotational angle ranges include the first and second crank rotational angles, respectively, and the measurements being indicative of at least one of a current level flowing in the electric motor, an angular velocity level of the crankshaft, and an angular acceleration level of the crankshaft.

### Claim 6 (depends on 5)

The electric power assist device according to claim 5, wherein the pedaling force estimator changes respective widths of the first and second crank rotational angle ranges such that the more one of the velocity level of the bicycle, the angular velocity level of the crankshaft, and the angular acceleration level of the crankshaft exceeds a corresponding predetermined reference range, the larger the respective widths of the first and second crank rotational angle ranges, and that the more the one of the velocity level of the bicycle, the angular velocity level of the crankshaft, and the angular acceleration level of the crankshaft falls behind the corresponding predetermined reference range, the smaller the respective widths of the first and second crank rotational angle ranges.

### Claim 7 (depends on 1)

A bicycle fitted with the electric power assist device according to claim 1.
