## Abstract

Aspects of an expandable sheath can be used in conjunction with a catheter assembly to introduce a prosthetic device, such as a heart valve, into a patient. Such aspects can minimize trauma to the vessel by allowing for temporary expansion of a portion of the introducer sheath to accommodate the delivery apparatus, followed by a return to the original diameter once the prosthetic device passes through. Some aspects can include a sheath with inner and outer layers having at least one folded portion of the inner liner. Some aspects include the inner liner having etched, unetched, and otherwise surface-modified portions. Aspects of the present expandable sheath can avoid the need for multiple insertions for the dilation of the vessel, thus offering advantages over prior art introducer sheaths.

### Claim 3 (depends on 1)

The sheath of claim 1, wherein the inner liner comprises a fluorocarbon-based polymer, and wherein the outer surface of the at least one first portion comprises a fluorine-to-carbon ratio that is lower than a fluorine-to-carbon ratio present on the outer surface of the at least one second portion of the inner liner.

### Claim 4 (depends on 1)

The sheath claim 1, wherein the outer surface of the at least one first portion of the inner liner exhibits an RMS value lower than an RMS value of the outer surface of the at least one second portion of the inner liner.

The sheath of claim 1, wherein the inner liner comprises two or more first portions and/or the inner liner comprises two or more second portions, and each of the two or more second portions, if present, comprises the same or different composition and/or morphology.

### Claim 7 (depends on 1)

The sheath of claim 1, wherein a length of the at least one first portion is greater than a length of the at least one second portion.

The sheath of claim 1, wherein the at least one second portion of the inner liner extends along the inner portion and/or the outer portion of the at least one folded portion of the inner liner, and/or wherein the at least one second portion of the inner liner extends along portions that contact the outer surface of the outer layer.

### Claim 10 (depends on 1)

The sheath of claim 1, wherein the outer layer comprises high-density polyethylene polymer (HDPE), nylon, or polypropylene.

### Claim 11 (depends on 1)

The sheath of claim 1, wherein the outer surface of the at least one second portion exhibits a contact angle from greater than about 65° to about 140° and/or wherein the outer surface of the at least one first portion exhibits a contact angle from about 30° to about 90°.

### Claim 12 (depends on 1)

The sheath of claim 1, wherein the inner liner comprises the at least one second portion at the proximal end of the sheath.

### Claim 13 (depends on 1)

The sheath of claim 1, wherein the at least one second portion of the inner liner is separated from the proximal end of the sheath by the at least one first portion of the inner liner such that the length of the at least one first portion is substantially similar or shorter than the length of the at least one second portion.
