## Abstract

A method may include incrementing, by a wireless device, a beam failure detection (BFD) instance counter based on detection of a first beam failure of a first reference signal (RS). The method may include resetting the BFD instance counter based on an indication of a transmission configuration indicator (TCI) state applicable for receptions of physical downlink channels, wherein the TCI state is associated with a second RS. The method may include transmitting a beam failure recovery request based on the BFD instance counter being greater than a threshold, wherein the BFD instance counter is incremented based on detection of a second beam failure of the second RS.

## Claims

### Claim 1

A method comprising:
incrementing, by a wireless device, a beam failure detection (BFD) instance counter based on detection of a first beam failure of a first reference signal (RS);
resetting the BFD instance counter based on an indication of a transmission configuration indicator (TCI) state applicable for receptions of physical downlink channels, wherein the TCI state is associated with a second RS; and
transmitting a beam failure recovery request based on the BFD instance counter being greater than a threshold, wherein the BFD instance counter is incremented based on detection of a second beam failure of the second RS.

### Claim 2 (depends on 1)

The method of claim 1, further comprising performing a BFD procedure based on a measurement of the first RS.

### Claim 3 (depends on 1)

The method of claim 1 further comprising receiving a downlink control command comprising the indication of the TCI state.

### Claim 4 (depends on 1)

The method of claim 1, wherein the first RS is associated with a second TCI state of control resource set (CORESET).

### Claim 5 (depends on 4)

The method of claim 4, wherein the first RS is a quasi-colocation RS of the second TCI state.

### Claim 6 (depends on 1)

The method of claim 1, wherein the incrementing the BFD instance counter comprises detecting a beam failure instance based on measurement of the first RS.

### Claim 7 (depends on 6)

The method of claim 6, wherein the detecting the beam failure instance is further based on a channel quality of the first RS being equal to or less than a BFD threshold.

### Claim 8 (depends on 1)

The method of claim 1, wherein the TCI state comprises a joint TCI state or a separate TCI state.

### Claim 9 (depends on 1)

The method of claim 1, further comprising switching from the first RS to the second RS for performing a BFD procedure based on the second RS.

### Claim 10 (depends on 1)

The method of claim 1, further comprising:
determining a measurement gap based on the indication of the TCI state; and
performing, in response to the determining, a BFD procedure based on the second RS.

### Claim 11

A wireless device comprising:
one or more processors; and
memory storing instructions that, when executed by the one or more processors, cause the wireless device to:
increment a beam failure detection (BFD) instance counter based on detection of a first beam failure of a first reference signal (RS);
reset the BFD instance counter based on an indication of a transmission configuration indicator (TCI) state applicable for receptions of physical downlink channels, wherein the TCI state is associated with a second RS; and
transmit a beam failure recovery request based on the BFD instance counter being greater than a threshold, wherein the BFD instance counter is incremented based on detection of a second beam failure of the second RS.

### Claim 12 (depends on 11)

The wireless device of claim 11, wherein the instructions further cause the wireless device to perform a BFD procedure based on a measurement of the first RS.

### Claim 13 (depends on 11)

The wireless device of claim 11 wherein the instructions further cause the wireless device to receive a downlink control command comprising the indication of the TCI state.

### Claim 14 (depends on 11)

The wireless device of claim 11, wherein the first RS is associated with a second TCI state of control resource set (CORESET).

### Claim 15 (depends on 14)

The wireless device of claim 14, wherein the first RS is a quasi-colocation RS of the second TCI state.

### Claim 16 (depends on 11)

The wireless device of claim 11, wherein the instructions further cause the wireless device to detect a beam failure instance based on measurement of the first RS.

### Claim 17 (depends on 16)

The wireless device of claim 16, wherein the beam failure instance is detected further based on a channel quality of the first RS being equal to or less than a BFD threshold.

### Claim 18 (depends on 11)

The wireless device of claim 11, wherein the TCI state comprises a joint TCI state or a separate TCI state.

### Claim 19 (depends on 11)

The wireless device of claim 11, further comprising wherein the instructions further cause the wireless device to switch from the first RS to the second RS for performing a BFD procedure based on the second RS.

### Claim 20

A system comprising:
a base station; and
a wireless device comprising:
one or more processors; and
memory storing instructions that, when executed by the one or more processors, cause the wireless device to:
