## Abstract

A system for performing a minimally invasive percutaneous procedure comprises a medical device comprising a hydrogel delivery needle (4) with a tip and a hydrogel outlet (6), an injectable, shear-thinning, self-healing viscoelastic hydrogel that exhibits a storage modulus (G′) of at least 600 Pa, and a tan δ (G"/G′) from 0.1 to 0.6 in dynamic viscoelasticity measured by a rheometer at 1 Hz and 1% strain rate at 25° C. The system may also comprise a coaxial cannula (2) having a lumen configured for receipt of the hydrogel delivery needle (4), wherein the hydrogel delivery needle comprises an adjustable positioning mechanism (8) configured to limit the advancement depth of the hydrogel delivery needle through the coaxial cannula to a predetermined depth distal to a distal-most end of the coaxial cannula.

### Claim 21

A method comprising:
injecting a viscoelastic hydrogel using a hydrogel delivery needle into a lung of a patient, the injecting performed at a location adjacent to a visceral pleura of the lung to form an annular sealing plug that embraces the hydrogel delivery needle, the annular sealing plug disposed wholly within the lung and close to or abutting the visceral pleura.

### Claim 22 (depends on 21)

The method of claim 21, wherein the annular sealing plug is disposed 0.2 to 6.0 mm distal of the visceral pleura.

### Claim 23 (depends on 21)

The method of claim 21, wherein the viscoelastic hydrogel is a shear thinning hydrogel.

### Claim 24 (depends on 21)

The method of claim 21, wherein the injection step comprises injection of a volume of 100 to 3000 µl of the viscoelastic hydrogel into the lung to form the annual sealing plug.

### Claim 25 (depends on 21)

The method of claim 21, wherein the injection step comprises injection of a volume of 100 to 1000 µl of the viscoelastic hydrogel into the lung to form the annual sealing plug.

### Claim 26 (depends on 21)

The method of claim 21, wherein the injection step comprises injection of a volume of 200 to 500 µl of the viscoelastic hydrogel into the lung to form the annual sealing plug.

### Claim 27 (depends on 21)

The method of claim 21, wherein the injecting includes injecting the viscoelastic hydrogel into the lung through a hydrogel outlet disposed at a distal-most tip of the hydrogel delivery needle.

### Claim 28 (depends on 21)

The method of claim 21, further comprising advancing a coaxial cannula along the hydrogel delivery needle and through the annual sealing plug whereby the annular sealing plug forms an airtight seal against the coaxial cannula.

### Claim 29 (depends on 21)

The method of claim 21, further comprising:
advancing a coaxial cannula along the hydrogel delivery needle and through the annual sealing plug whereby the annular sealing plug forms an airtight seal against the coaxial cannula; and
advancing a lung procedure needle through the coaxial cannula.

### Claim 30 (depends on 21)

The method of claim 21, further comprising:
advancing a coaxial cannula along the hydrogel delivery needle and through the annual sealing plug whereby the annular sealing plug forms an airtight seal against the coaxial cannula; and
advancing a lung biopsy needle through the coaxial cannula.

### Claim 31 (depends on 21)

The method of claim 21, further comprising:
advancing a coaxial cannula along the hydrogel delivery needle and through the annual sealing plug whereby the annular sealing plug forms an airtight seal against the coaxial cannula;
advancing a lung biopsy needle through the coaxial cannula; and
taking a biopsy of lung tissue using the lung biopsy needle.

### Claim 32 (depends on 21)

The method of claim 21, further comprising:
advancing a coaxial cannula along the hydrogel delivery needle and through the annual sealing plug whereby the annular sealing plug forms an airtight seal against the coaxial cannula; and
advancing a tissue stain delivery needle through the coaxial cannula.

### Claim 33 (depends on 21)

The method of claim 21, further comprising:
advancing a coaxial cannula along the hydrogel delivery needle and through the annular sealing plug;
removing the hydrogel delivery needle through the cannula;
advancing a lung procedure needle through the cannula to a target location within the lung;
actuating the lung procedure needle;
withdrawing the lung procedure needle through the cannula; and
withdrawing the cannula, whereby the annular sealing plug seals the visceral pleura preventing pneumothorax.

### Claim 34 (depends on 33)

The method of claim 33, wherein the lung procedure needle is selected from a group including a lung biopsy needle and a tissue stain delivery needle.

### Claim 35 (depends on 21)

The method of claim 21, further comprising imaging the lung to correctly position the hydrogel delivery needle to deliver the viscoelastic hydrogel just distal of the visceral pleura.

### Claim 36 (depends on 21)

The method of claim 21, wherein the viscoelastic hydrogel is a lung tissue apposing hydrogel having properties that limits its infiltration of lung tissue.
