Abstract
A thermal transfer ribbon includes a carrier layer, a release layer, and a thermally transferable ink layer. The ink layer includes an active ink having a chemistry that is configured, responsive to the occurrence of an environmental, physical or biological condition, to undergo a chemical or physical state change causing a change in the color state of the active ink.
Claims21
1-15. (canceled)
A method of manufacturing a thermal transfer ribbon, the method comprising:
- providing a carrier;
- providing a coating material;
- coating the coating material to a top side of the carrier to form a back coating layer;
- providing a release material;
- coating the release material to a bottom side of the carrier to form a release layer;
- providing an ink material, wherein the ink material comprises an active ink having a chemistry that is configured, responsive to the occurrence of an environmental, physical or biological condition, to undergo a chemical or physical state change causing a change in the color state of the active ink;
- and
- coating the release layer with the ink material to form an ink layer.
5 more elements
A sensor-augmented indicator, comprising:
- a substrate;
- and
- a symbol provided on the substrate from a thermal transfer ribbon of any of claim 15, wherein the symbol includes an active ink having a chemistry that is configured, responsive to the occurrence of an environmental, physical or biological condition, to undergo a chemical or physical state change causing a change in the color state of the active ink, thereby changing the color state of the indicator, and wherein the symbol provided on the substrate comprises a portion of the release layer and the thermally transferable ink layer of the thermal transfer ribbon.
