System and method for operating an asynchronous inverter-based resource as a virtual synchronous machine to provide grid-forming control thereof

A method for operating a plurality of grid-forming inverter-based resources connected in parallel to a power grid, each of the plurality of inverter-based resources having an asynchronous machine, the method comprising:

• providing a first droop characteristic function relating frequency to an active power droop and a second droop characteristic function relating a grid voltage ‘q’ axis component to reactive power droop;
• determining a frequency reference command and a voltage reference command for the plurality of inverter-based resources based on instantaneous power and the first droop characteristic function and the second droop characteristic function, respectively;
• and
• controlling the plurality of inverter-based resources based on the frequency and voltage reference commands, wherein the first and second droop characteristic functions allow the plurality of inverter-based resources to participate in controlling voltage and frequency at a point of interconnection between the plurality of inverter-based resources and the power grid in proportion to the respective frequency reference command and the voltage reference command.
