Abstract
Described herein are nanofibers and methods for making nanofibers that include any one or more of (a) a non-homogeneous charge density; (b) a plurality of regions of high charge density; and/or (c) charged nanoparticles or chargeable nanoparticles. In one aspect, the present invention fulfills a need for filtration media that are capable of both high performance (e.g., removal of particle sizes between 0.1 and 0.5 μm) with a low pressure drop, however the invention is not limited in this regard.
Claims21
-20. (canceled)
A filter comprising:
- a nanofiber comprising a first material comprising a polymer and a second material comprising a charged or chargeable material;
- wherein the charged or chargeable material constitutes or comprises one or more regions of high charge density on or in the nanofiber configured to capture at least part of a plurality of particles in a fluid against the filter.
A method of making a fibrous mat comprising:
- providing a fluid stock comprising a polymer and a charged or chargeable material;
- electrospinning the fluid stock to form a fibrous mat comprising a plurality of nanofibers;
- wherein the nanofibers comprise a first material comprising the polymer and a second material comprising the charged or chargeable material;
- and
- wherein the charged or chargeable material constitutes or comprises one or more regions of high charge density on or in the nanofibers.
