A method for modulating transcription of a gene that comprises at least one oligonucleotide repeat by contacting a cell comprising the gene with an agent having a formula A-L-B, wherein L is a linker;
- A is a bromodomain binding moiety;
- and B is a nucleic acid binding moiety that specifically binds to the at least one oligonucleotide repeat, thereby modulating transcription of the gene in the cell, wherein A is not a triazolodiazepine.
