Abstract
A bioactive coated substrate includes a base substrate, an indicator layer disposed over the base substrate, and a bioactive layer disposed on the indicator layer. Characteristically, the indicator layer has color sufficiently different from the bioactive layer to be visually perceived by a user when the bioactive layer wears away.

A bioactive coated substrate comprising:
- a base substrate;
- an indicator layer disposed over the base substrate;
- and
- a bioactive layer disposed on the indicator layer where the indicator layer has color sufficiently different from the bioactive layer to be visually perceived by a user when the bioactive layer wears away.

A bioactive coated substrate comprising:
- a base substrate;
- a base layer disposed over the base substrate;
- and
- a plurality of alternating bioactive layers and interlayers disposed over the base layer, wherein the base layer and/or at least one of the interlayers is an indicator layer that has a color sufficiently different from the bioactive layers to be visually perceived by a user when one or more of the bioactive layers wears away.
