## Abstract

A method includes forming an ionic liquid-based product, the ionic liquid-based product including an ionic liquid and mixing the ionic-liquid based product with a fluid. The method also includes injecting the fluid mixed with the ionic-liquid based product into a formation as part of an Improved Oil Recovery (IOR) application.

## Claims

### Claim 1

A method comprising:
forming an ionic liquid-based product, the ionic liquid-based product including an ionic liquid;
mixing the ionic-liquid based product with a fluid; and
injecting the fluid mixed with the ionic-liquid based product into a formation as part of an Improved Oil Recovery (IOR) application.

### Claim 2 (depends on 1)

The method of claim 1, wherein the ionic liquid is one or more of:
where R1-R4 are selected from linear or branched, substituted or unsubstituted, alkyls, aryls, alkoxyalkyls, alkylenearyl hydroxyalkyls, or haloalkyls; X is an anion; Y is a cation; Z is a neutral molecule capable of hydrogen bonding; m and n are chosen to provide electronic neutrality; and q is an integer from 0 to 1000.

### Claim 3 (depends on 2)

The method of claim 2, wherein X is methylsulfate, PF, BF, or a halide.

### Claim 4 (depends on 2)

The method of claim 2, wherein Z is glycerol, citric acid, or urea.

### Claim 5 (depends on 2)

The method of claim 2, wherein Y contains a heteroatom.

### Claim 6 (depends on 1)

The method of claim 1, wherein the ionic liquid is water soluble.

### Claim 7 (depends on 1)

The method of claim 1, wherein the ionic liquid is not water soluble.

### Claim 8 (depends on 7)

The method of claim 7 further comprising forming a microemulsion or emulsion as part of forming the ionic liquid-based product.

### Claim 9 (depends on 8)

The method of claim 8, wherein the emulsion or microemulsion further comprises a surfactant or surfactant mixture.

### Claim 10 (depends on 9)

The method of claim 9 further comprising mixing the ionic liquid with a solvent prior to forming the microemulsion or emulsion.

### Claim 11 (depends on 10)

The method of claim 10, wherein the solvent is an alkane, cycloalkane, aromatic, alcohol, esters, ether, ketone, amine, phenol, chloroform, terpene, d-limonene, ethylene glycol, or polyethylene glycol.

### Claim 12 (depends on 1)

The method of claim 1, wherein the IOR is a hydraulic fracturing operation and the fluid is a fracturing fluid.

### Claim 13 (depends on 1)

The method of claim 1, wherein the IOR is an acidizing operation and the fluid is acid.

### Claim 14 (depends on 1)

The method of claim 1, wherein the IOR is a secondary recovery and the fluid is injected water.

### Claim 15 (depends on 1)

The method of claim 1, wherein the IOR is a tertiary recovery and the fluid is injected water.
