Abstract
A folding chair includes front and rear supports that fold and/or retract into central beams to reduce the space occupied by the chair in a folded configuration. A backrest is coupled to the central beams with a hub that allows an angle of the backrest relative to the central beams to be selected and for the backrest to be folded flat relative to the central beams. One or more actuators and pin actuators may control the relative movements of the backrest, front support, rear support, and central beams.
Claims26
A hub for a chair comprising:
- a housing coupled to a first leg and a second leg which extend from the housing in opposite directions;
- a rotational coupler rotatably disposed in the housing, wherein the rotational coupler is connected to a beam, wherein the rotational coupler includes a plurality of locking regions, and where the rotational coupler is configured to rotate in a first direction and a second opposing direction, wherein the first direction is a recline direction;
- a spring configured to bias the rotational coupler to rotate in the second direction;
- a rotation lock configured to engage at least one of the plurality of locking regions to inhibit rotation of the rotational coupler relative to the housing;
- and
- a trigger which abuts the rotation lock and is configured to move the rotation lock out of engagement with the at least one of the plurality of locking regions when the trigger is actuated by a user.
A method of adjusting a chair including a hub having a housing coupled to a first leg and a second leg which extend from the housing in opposite directions and a rotational coupler rotatably disposed in the housing and configured to rotate in a first recline direction and a second opposing direction, the method comprising:
- biasing the rotational coupler to rotate in the second direction with a spring;
- engaging a rotation lock with at least one of a plurality of locking regions of the rotational coupler to inhibit rotation of the rotational coupler in the first direction, wherein the rotational coupler is connected to a beam;
- and
- moving the rotation lock with a trigger to disengage the rotation lock from the at least one of the plurality of locking regions to allow the rotational coupler to rotate in the first direction.
