Abstract
A novel method of growing fungi is disclosed which uses an engineered artificial media and produces high density filamentous fungi biomats that can be harvested with a minimum of processing and from which fungal products such as antibiotics, proteins, and lipids can be isolated, the method resulting in lowered fungus cultivation costs for energy usage, oxygenation, water usage and waste stream production.
Claims30
A method of growing fungal mycelium comprising the steps of:
- providing a plurality of containers, each container defining a cavity containing liquid medium and a fungus;
- placing the containers in a closed incubation chamber;
- maintaining the closed incubation chamber with controlled environmental conditions sufficient to produce a fungal mycelial biomass;
- directing airflow through the incubation chamber;
- incubating the liquid medium and fungus in each container;
- and
- passing the airflow over the liquid medium and fungus in each container;
- wherein the incubating is for a period of time sufficient for the fungus to digest the liquid medium and produce the fungal mycelial biomass in each container.
A fungal mycelial biomass, wherein the fungal mycelial biomass is in the form of a mat, is an essentially pure fungal biomass, and comprises aerial hyphae.
