Abstract
There is provided a machining assembly and cutting insert for machining metal or like workpieces, wherein the cutting insert body has a cutting end. The cutting end comprises at least one cutting edge and at least one cutting lip formed adjacent the at least one cutting edge. The at least one cutting lip includes at least one cutting protrusion and associated chip cutting edge to split the chip formed by the at least one cutting edge, for producing chips during machining which are of a width that is sufficiently reduced to allow proper evacuation or removal.
Claims20
A machining tool comprising a body having at least one cutting edge, with at least one cutting lip formed adjacent the at least one cutting edge, and at least one cutting protrusion formed in the at least one cutting lip, the at least one cutting protrusion having a wedge shape formed by flanks extending a distance at a wedge angle away from a chip cutting edge positioned adjacent the at least one cutting edge, wherein chip sections of material being machined formed by the at least one cutting edge are split by the chip cutting edge and flow against at least one of the flank surfaces to impart strain to the chip section to facilitate segmenting of the split chips lengthwise into shorter pieces as the chip moves away from the at least one cutting edge.
A machining tool assembly comprising:
- a holder having first and second ends and a rotational axis, wherein the second end is adapted to be fixedly attached in a machining machine, and the first end having at least one cutting insert mounted thereon, the cutting insert having a body with a cutting end with at least one cutting edge and associated at least one cutting lip, at least one cutting protrusion in the at least one cutting lip including at least one chip cutting edge extending from a position adjacent the at least one cutting edge of the at least one insert, and having a height to cut chips formed by the at least one cutting edge during machining.
A machining insert for machining workpieces comprising:
- a body having a cutting end with at least one cutting edge and at least one cutting lip, with the at least one cutting lip including at least one cutting protrusion having a length and an axis extending transverse to the at least one cutting edge, the at least one cutting protrusion having a chip cutting edge positioned adjacent the at least one cutting edge, and having flanks that transition to the cutting lip surface at an obtuse angle relative to axis of the at least one cutting protrusion to form an increased width extending away from the at least one cutting edge, wherein the at least one chip cutting edge cuts the chip formed by the at least one cutting edge and the flanks separate the cut chip as it moves away from the at least one cutting edge.
