Abstract
An approach is provided for detecting location-based events and/or points of interest based on mobile device orientation changes. The approach, for example, involves determining an orientation change of a mobile device moving in a geographic area based on sensor data collected from one or more sensors of the mobile device. The approach also involves determining a location of the orientation change based on the sensor data. The approach further involves detecting a map incident (e.g., a traffic accident), a map feature (e.g., a point of interest), or a combination occurring within a proximity of the location based on the orientation change.
Claims20
A method comprising:
- determining an orientation change of a mobile device moving in a geographic area based on sensor data collected from one or more sensors of the mobile device;
- determining a location of the orientation change based on the sensor data;
- and
- detecting a map incident, a map feature, or a combination occurring within a proximity of the location based on the orientation change.
An apparatus comprising:
- at least one processor;
- and
- at least one memory including computer program code for one or more programs,
- the at least one memory and the computer program code configured to, with the at least one processor, cause the apparatus to perform at least the following,
- process sensor data collected by one or more sensors of a mobile device moving in a geographic area, to detect at least one of:
- (1) an alignment of the mobile device with respect to a plane of a window of a vehicle carrying the mobile device,
- (2) a movement that extends the mobile device from inside the vehicle to outside the vehicle;
- determine a location of the alignment, the movement, or a combination thereof based on the sensor data;
- and
- detect a map incident, a map feature, or a combination occurring within a proximity of the location based on the alignment, the movement, or a combination thereof.
A non-transitory computer-readable storage medium carrying one or more sequences of one or more instructions which, when executed by one or more processors, cause an apparatus to at least perform the following steps:
- processing location data and image capturing enablement data collected by sensors of one or more mobile devices moving in a geographic area to determine that the one or more mobile devices are located in proximity with each other while capturing image data within a predetermined time period;
- upon determining that an amount of the image capturing enablement data exceeds an amount of historical baseline image capturing enablement data by a threshold, processing the image data to detect a map incident, a map feature, or a combination thereof occurring within the proximity of the one or more mobile devices.
