Abstract
A method of encoding packets of a media stream includes establishing a data connection between a client device and a server, sending a first packet of the media stream from the server to the client device at a first bit rate, receiving, at the server, a first acknowledgment signal from the client device responsive to receipt of the first packet, determining a second bit rate based on the first acknowledgment signal, and sending a second packet of the media stream from the server to the client at the second bit rate.
Claims20
A method of encoding a media stream comprising a plurality of packets, the method comprising:
- establishing a data connection between a server and a media player;
- configuring the server with a buffer for transmission by modifying a bitrate based on contents of the buffer when transmitting;
- increasing the bitrate for transmitting based on a criteria associated with the contents of the buffer wherein the criteria at least comprises a level of depletion of packet data of the buffer while transmitting;
- and
- decreasing the bitrate for transmission based on the criteria associated with the contents of buffer wherein the criteria at least comprises the level of fulfillment of the buffer with packet data.
A media encoder system comprising:
- a processor;
- a memory component;
- computer-readable software instructions stored within the memory component and configured to cause the processor to:
- establish a data connection between at least a media player and a server;
- configure the server with a transmit buffer for transmission by modifying a bitrate based on contents of the buffer when transmitting;
- increase the bitrate for transmission based on a criteria associated with the contents of the buffer wherein the criteria at least comprises a level of depletion of packet data of the buffer while transmitting;
- and
- decrease the bitrate for transmission based on the criteria associated with the contents of buffer wherein the criteria at least comprises the level of fulfillment of the buffer with packet data.
A media system comprising:
- a media player;
- a media encoder system communicatively coupled to the media player via a data connection established over a network, the media encoder system configured to:
- implement a transmit buffer by modifying a bitrate based on contents of the transmit buffer while transmitting;
- increase the bitrate of the transmit buffer for transmission based on a criteria associated with the contents of the transmit buffer wherein the criteria at least comprises depleted level of packet data contained in the transmit buffer;
- and
- decrease the bitrate of the transmit buffer for transmission based on the criteria associated with the contents of transmit buffer wherein the criteria at least comprises a filled level of packet data contained in the transmit buffer.
