Displaying dci and other content on an enhanced dynamic range projector

A multi-modulation projection display system comprising:

• a first modulator comprising a plurality of analog mirrors;
• a second modulator comprising a plurality of mirrors;
• and
• a controller configured to:
• receive input image data comprising at least one bright feature on a black background,
• determine whether the input image data comprises Digital Cinema Initiative (DCI)-compliant image data,
• determine whether the input image data comprises Enhanced Dynamic Range (EDR) image data,
• process the EDR image data in response to determining that the input image data comprises the EDR image data,
• set a luminance of the first modulator as a function of a ratio of a DCI maximum luminance to a maximum luminance of an EDR projector system in response to processing the EDR image data and determining that the input image data comprises the DCI image data,
• perform dynamic range processing on the DCI image data by creating a blurred halftone image on the first modulator, and
• render the DCI image data that is processed from the first modulator on the second modulator.

A method for rendering Digital Cinema Initiative (DCI)-compliant image data on an Enhanced Dynamic Range (EDR) projector system comprising a first modulator and a second modulator, the method comprising:

• setting a luminance of the first modulator as a function of a ratio of a DCI maximum luminance to a maximum luminance of the EDR projector system;
• performing dynamic range processing on the DCI image data by creating a blurred halftone image on the first modulator;
• and
• rendering the DCI image data that is processed from the first modulator on the second modulator.
