Patient support apparatus for supporting a patient above a first surface, the apparatus comprising:

a support frame movable across a second surface to a position adjacent the first surface;
and
a support portion extending outwardly relative to the support frame, the support portion positionable on the first surface to enable the patient to be moved onto the support portion so that the patient is held on the support portion above the first surface.
