Abstract
A problem is to provide a prebiotic which promotes the growth of a butyrate-producing bacterium. A prebiotic composition is described that promotes the growth of a butyrate-producing bacterium which contains alginic acid and/or a salt thereof.

A prebiotic composition useful for promoting the growth of a butyrate-producing bacterium, wherein said composition comprises alginic acid and/or a salt thereof.
A method of manufacturing a prebiotic composition useful in promoting the growth of a butyrate-producing bacterium, comprising formulating a composition comprising alginic acid and/or a salt thereof.
