Abstract
A polymer surfactant for improving engine oil emulsion properties of a lubricating composition mixed with water and/or fuel contamination, particularly at very cold temperatures, is described herein. In approaches, selected polymeric and functionalized compounds can impart both robust emulsion properties and simultaneously deliver good low temperature fluidity for lubricating compositions that may contain residual amounts of water and/or fuel contamination. Lubricating compositions including such surfactants demonstrate robust properties at temperatures down to about −30° C.

A method of lubricating an engine at low temperatures, the method comprising providing a lubricating composition to the engine and lubricating the engine with the lubricating composition at temperatures below −10° C. to about −30° C., and wherein the lubricating composition includes a base oil of lubricating viscosity, a polymeric surfactant having a weight average molecular weight of about 40,000 or greater and including non-polar moieties and polar functional groups effective to maintain a fluid viscosity of the lubricating composition including water and/or fuel contamination as evidenced by a measured flow point of about 75% or less at lubricating composition temperatures below −10° C. to about −30° C.
A method for maintaining a fluid viscosity of a lubricating composition, water, and/or fuel at temperatures below −10° C. to about −30° C., the method comprising adding to a lubricating composition an additive including a polymeric surfactant with non-polar moieties and polar functional groups effective to maintain a fluid viscosity of the lubricating composition, water, and/or fuel as evidenced by a measured flow point of about 75% or less at lubricant temperatures below −10° C. to about −30° C. when the lubricating composition is mixed with water and/or fuel contamination, and wherein the polymeric surfactant has a weight average molecular weight of about 40,000 or greater.
