## Abstract

A firearm has an emitter that propagates a light beam to a receiver and at least two finger position beams that propagate horizontally along the firearm on either side of a switch that provides detection of a position of a finger when the finger blocks and unblocks the finger position beam. Further, when only one finger position beam is blocked, this indicates improper positioning of the finger placing the firearm into a non-dischargeable condition.

## Claims

### Claim 1

A firearm, comprising:
an emitter that propagates a light beam to a receiver;
at least two finger position beams that propagate along the firearm on either side of a switch that provides detection of a position of a finger when the finger blocks and unblocks the finger position beam;
wherein when only one finger position beam is blocked, this indicates improper positioning of the finger placing the firearm into a non-dischargeable condition.

### Claim 2 (depends on 1)

The firearm of claim 1, wherein the finger moves to block or unblock the light beam by flexion or extension.

### Claim 3 (depends on 1)

The firearm of claim 1, wherein the trigger is mounted on a shield.

### Claim 4 (depends on 1)

The firearm of claim 1, wherein the emitter is in alignment with the receiver and a beam emitted from the emitter is incident upon the receiver.

### Claim 5 (depends on 1)

The firearm of claim 1, wherein the shield may vary in shape, vertical or horizontal orientation, width, and slope.

### Claim 6 (depends on 1)

The firearm of claim 1, wherein the trigger comprises one or more of a shield, a switch, an emitter, and a receiver.
