## Abstract

A compressing device for use in an environmental control system includes at least one turbine configured to provide energy by expanding one or more medium. The one or more mediums provided at an outlet of the at least one turbine form a heat sink within the environmental control system. A compressor is configured to receive energy from the one or more mediums expanded across the at least one turbine. During a first mode of the compressing device, energy derived from a first medium of the one or more mediums is used to compress a second medium at the compressor and during a second mode of the compressing device, energy derived from both the first medium and a third medium of the one or more mediums is used to compress a second medium at the compressor.

## Claims

### Claim 1

A compressing device for use in an environmental control system comprising:
at least one turbine configured to provide energy by expanding one or more mediums, wherein the one or more mediums provided at an outlet of the at least one turbine form a heat sink within the environmental control system; and
a compressor configured to receive energy from the one or more mediums expanded across the at least one turbine, wherein during a first mode of the compressing device, energy derived from a first medium of the one or more mediums is used to compress a second medium at the compressor and during a second mode of the compressing device, energy derived from both the first medium and a third medium of the one or more mediums is used to compress a second medium at the compressor.

### Claim 2 (depends on 1)

The compressing device of claim 1, wherein the at least one turbine includes a first turbine configured to receive and extract work from the first medium and a second turbine configured to receive and extract work from the third medium.

### Claim 3 (depends on 2)

The compressing device of claim 2, wherein the first medium and the third medium are mixed together downstream from both the first turbine and the second turbine.

### Claim 4 (depends on 2)

The compressing device of claim 2, wherein the first turbine and the second turbine are arranged in series such that the second turbine is also configured to receive and extract work from the first medium.

### Claim 5 (depends on 4)

The compressing device of claim 4, wherein the first medium and the third medium are mixed together upstream from an inlet of the second turbine.

### Claim 6 (depends on 5)

The compressing device of claim 5, wherein the first medium and the third medium are mixed together downstream from an outlet of the first turbine.

### Claim 7 (depends on 2)

The compressing device of claim 2, wherein the first turbine and the second turbine are located at opposite ends of the shaft.

### Claim 8 (depends on 2)

The compressing device of claim 2, wherein the first turbine is positioned adjacent a first end of the shaft and the compressor is positioned adjacent a second end of the shaft.

### Claim 9 (depends on 1)

The compressing device of claim 1, wherein the at least one turbine includes a first nozzle for receiving the first medium and a second nozzle for receiving the third medium.

### Claim 10 (depends on 1)

The compressing device of claim 1, wherein the first medium is bleed air.

### Claim 11 (depends on 1)

The compressing device of claim 1, wherein the second medium is fresh air.

### Claim 12 (depends on 1)

The compressing device of claim 1, wherein the third medium is cabin air.
