## Abstract

Disclosed methods of inhibiting microsomal prostaglandin E2 (PGE2) synthase-1 (mPGES-1) make use of ceftriaxone, aztreonam, cefotetan, pharmaceutically-acceptable salts thereof, and combinations thereof.

## Claims

### Claim 1

A method of inhibiting expression or activity of prostaglandin E2 (PGE2) in a cell, comprising contacting the cell with or introducing into the cell an effective amount of an mPGES-1 inhibitor, selected from the group consisting of ceftriaxone, aztreonam, cefotetan, pharmaceutically-acceptable salts thereof, and combinations thereof, wherein the contacting or introducing results in inhibition of expression or activity of PGE2 in the cell.

### Claim 2 (depends on 1)

The method of claim 1, wherein the inhibitor is ceftriaxone or a pharmaceutically-acceptable salt thereof.

### Claim 3 (depends on 1)

The method of claim 1, wherein the inhibitor is aztreonam or a pharmaceutically-acceptable salt thereof.

### Claim 4 (depends on 1)

The method of claim 1, wherein the inhibitor is cefotetan or a pharmaceutically-acceptable salt thereof.

### Claim 5 (depends on 1)

The method of claim 1, wherein the inhibitor is provided in a pharmaceutical composition further comprising a pharmaceutically-acceptable carrier.

### Claim 6 (depends on 1)

The method of claim 1, wherein the cell is in a subject.

### Claim 7

A method of treating coronavirus in a subject, comprising administering to the subject an effective amount of an mPGES-1 inhibitor, selected from the group consisting of ceftriaxone, aztreonam, cefotetan, pharmaceutically-acceptable salts thereof, and combinations thereof.

### Claim 8 (depends on 7)

The method of claim 7, wherein the coronavirus is SARS-CoV-2.

### Claim 9 (depends on 7)

The method of claim 7, and further comprising identifying the subject as having been exposed to the coronavirus, having tested positive for the coronavirus, and/or displaying one or more symptoms associated with the coronavirus.

### Claim 10 (depends on 7)

The method of claim 7, wherein the mPGES-1 inhibitor is administered without any additional active agents.

### Claim 11 (depends on 7)

The method of claim 7, and further comprising administering an anti-viral agent.

### Claim 12 (depends on 11)

The method of claim 11, wherein the anti-viral agent is selected from the group consisting of remdesivir, chloroquine, hydroxychloroquine, oseltamivir, favipiravir, umifenovir, and galidesivir.

### Claim 13

A method of reducing inflammation in a subject, comprising administering to the subject an effective amount of an mPGES-1 inhibitor, selected from the group consisting of ceftriaxone, aztreonam, cefotetan, pharmaceutically-acceptable salts thereof, and combinations thereof.

### Claim 14 (depends on 13)

The method of claim 13, and further comprising identifying the subject as having edema.

### Claim 15 (depends on 13)

The method of claim 13, and further comprising identifying the subject as having stroke, sepsis, pneumonia, airway inflammation, heart failure, typhoid fever, or vascular inflammation.

### Claim 16 (depends on 15)

The method of claim 15, wherein the subject has vascular inflammation that is an abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA).

### Claim 17

A method of reducing pain in a subject, comprising administering to the subject an effective amount of an mPGES-1 inhibitor, selected from the group consisting of ceftriaxone, aztreonam, cefotetan, pharmaceutically-acceptable salts thereof, and combinations thereof.

### Claim 18 (depends on 17)

The method of claim 17, and further comprising identifying the subject as having pain.

### Claim 19 (depends on 17)

The method of claim 17, and further comprising identifying the subject as having hyperalgesia.

### Claim 20 (depends on 17)

The method of claim 17, and further comprising identifying the subject has having arthritis pain.
