Abstract
A surgical instrument including a housing, an endoscopic portion, a shaft portion and an end effector is disclosed. The endoscopic portion extends distally from the housing and defines a longitudinal axis. The shaft portion is selectively connectable to a distal end of the endoscopic portion. The end effector is selectively connectable to a distal end of the shaft portion.

A surgical tool, comprising:
- a housing;
- a shaft comprising a proximalend and a distal end, the proximalend of the shaft being connected to the housing;
- an end effector connected to the distal end of the shaft, the end effector comprising a first jaw and a second jaw, at least one of the first jaw or the second jaw being configured to pivot relative to the other of the first jaw or the second jaw;
- a transmission at least partially disposed within the housing, the transmission being shiftable between a first configuration, a second configuration, and a third configuration, the transmission comprising:
- a first input shaft configured to supply rotary motion to the transmission, the rotation of the first input shaft configured to drive a first function of the surgical tool when the transmission is in the first configuration, to drive a second function of the surgical tool when the transmission is in the second configuration, and to drive a third function of the surgical when the transmission is in the third configuration;
- a second input shaft configured to supply rotatory motion to the transmission, the rotation of the second input shaft configured to shift the transmission between the first configuration, the second configuration, and the third configuration;
- one of the first function, the second function, or the third function comprising rotation of the shaft of the surgical tool;
- and
- a different one of the first function, the second function, or the third function comprising pivoting at least one of the first jaw and the second jaw of the end effector relative to the other of the first jaw or the second jaw.

A surgical tool, comprising:
- a housing;
- a shaft having a proximal end and a distal end, the proximal end of the shaft being connected to the housing;
- an end effector connected to the distal end of the shaft, the end effector comprising a first jaw and a second jaw, at least one of the first jaw or the second jaw being configured to pivot relative to the other of the first jaw or the second jaw:

- a transmission at least partially disposed within the housing, the transmission being shiftable between a first configuration, a second configuration, and a third configuration, in response to rotational movements of a first motor;
- the transmission configured to, in response to rotational movement of a second motor, drive a first function of the surgical tool when the transmission is in the first configuration, a second function of the surgical tool when the transmission is in the second configuration, and a third function of the surgical tool when the transmission is in the third configuration;
- one of the first function, the second function, or the third function comprising rotation the shaft of the surgical tool, and
- a different one of the first function, the second function, or the third function comprising pivoting at least one of the first jaw and the second jaw of the end effector relative to the other.
