Abstract
An in-tank fuel pump assembly and mounting system is disclosed which may be configured for mounting inside a fuel tank. The assembly includes a pump housing, pump mounted to the housing, and pressure relief valve. The housing may comprise upper and lower pump housing units coupled together. The upper housing unit is configured for mounting to a tank opening, which in one implementation may be the fuel fill opening. The lower housing unit extends into the tank to approximately the bottom of the tank. A fuel fill fluid pathway is created through the housing for adding fuel to the tank while the pump assembly remains in situ. The upper housing unit may include a removable fuel cap. The pump housing may include an integral vapor trap.
Claims20
A fuel tank for an internal combustion engine comprising:
- a hollow body defining an internal reservoir configured for holding liquid fuel and a fuel fill opening at top configured for adding the fuel to the tank;
- a fuel pump having a pump housing suspended in the reservoir from the fuel fill opening;
- wherein the pump housing comprises an internal cavity defining a fuel fill pathway between the fuel fill opening of the tank and the reservoir.
A fuel pump assembly comprising:
- a pump housing including an annular upper housing unit and a vertically elongated lower housing unit removably coupled thereto;
- the upper housing unit configured for detachable coupling to a fuel fill opening in a fuel tank through which fuel is added to the tank, the upper housing unit including an internal cavity;
- the lower housing unit having a longitudinal concavity in fluid communication with the internal cavity of the upper housing unit;
- and
- a fuel pump coupled to the lower housing unit.
