## Abstract

The present invention relates to a method for reducing blood pressure by stimulating lymphatic vessel growth and/or lymphangiogenesis in the kidneys.

## Claims

### Claim 1

A method of treatment of a subject comprising:
(a) providing a drug delivery vehicle comprising a carrier and a composition that stimulates lymphatic vessel growth, wherein said drug delivery vehicle delivers drug to the kidney; and
(b) treating said subject by administering said drug delivery vehicle under conditions such that lymphatic vessel growth is stimulated in one or more of the kidneys of said subject.

### Claim 2 (depends on 1)

The method of claim 1, wherein the number of lymphatic vessels is increased in one or more of the kidneys of said subject.

### Claim 3 (depends on 1)

The method of claim 1, wherein the subject has a blood pressure and wherein said blood pressure is lower after step b).

### Claim 4 (depends on 1)

The method of claim 1, wherein said drug delivery vehicle delivers drug to the kidney with negligible delivery to the liver.

### Claim 5 (depends on 1)

The method of claim 1, wherein said drug delivery vehicle delivers at least ten times more drug to the kidney as drug delivered to the liver.

### Claim 6 (depends on 1)

The method of claim 1, wherein said drug delivery vehicle delivers at least twenty times more drug to the kidney as drug delivered to the liver.

### Claim 7 (depends on 1)

The method of claim 1, wherein said carrier comprises a nanoparticle.

### Claim 8 (depends on 1)

The method of claim 1, wherein said carrier comprises a protein.

### Claim 9 (depends on 8)

The method of claim 8, wherein said protein is lysozyme.

### Claim 10 (depends on 1)

The method of claim 1, wherein said subject has hypertension.

### Claim 11 (depends on 10)

The method of claim 10, wherein said hypertension comprises salt-sensitive hypertension.

### Claim 12 (depends on 1)

The method of claim 1, wherein said treating enhances renal lymphatic expansion.

### Claim 13 (depends on 1)

The method of claim 1, wherein said composition comprises VEGF-D.

### Claim 14 (depends on 1)

The method of claim 1, wherein said composition comprises VEGF-C.

### Claim 15 (depends on 1)

The method of claim 1, wherein said composition comprises VEGF-C with a c156s mutation.

### Claim 16 (depends on 1)

The method of claim 1, wherein said composition comprises a virus encoding at least one vascular endothelial growth factor.

### Claim 17 (depends on 16)

The method of claim 16, wherein said vascular endothelial growth factor is selected from the group consisting of VEGF-C, VEGF-D, or variants thereof.

### Claim 18

A method of inducing renal lymphangiogenesis, comprising:
(a) providing a drug delivery vehicle comprising a nanoparticle and composition comprising VEGF-C with a c156s mutation, wherein said drug delivery vehicle delivers said composition to the kidney; and
(b) treating said subject by administering said drug delivery vehicle under conditions such that renal lymphangiogenesis is induced in one or more of the kidneys of said subject.

### Claim 19 (depends on 18)

The method of claim 18, wherein the number of lymphatic vessels is increased in one or more of the kidneys of said subject.

### Claim 20 (depends on 18)

The method of claim 18, wherein the subject has a blood pressure and wherein said blood pressure is lower after step b).

### Claim 21 (depends on 18)

The method of claim 18, wherein said drug delivery vehicle delivers drug to the kidney with negligible delivery to the liver.

### Claim 22 (depends on 18)

The method of claim 18, wherein said drug delivery vehicle delivers at least ten times more drug to the kidney as drug delivered to the liver.

### Claim 23 (depends on 18)

The method of claim 18, wherein said drug delivery vehicle delivers at least twenty times more drug to the kidney as drug delivered to the liver.

### Claim 24 (depends on 18)

The method of claim 18, wherein said subject has hypertension.

### Claim 25 (depends on 24)

The method of claim 24, wherein said hypertension comprises salt-sensitive hypertension.

### Claim 26 (depends on 18)

The method of claim 18, wherein said composition comprises a virus expressing said VEGF-C with a c156s mutation.

### Claim 27 (depends on 18)

The method of claim 18, wherein said composition comprises a vector expressing said VEGF-C with a c156s mutation.
