Systems and methods for managing remote control units and paired devices

A remote control unit, comprising:

• at least one processor;
• and
• a communications module coupled to the at least one processor, wherein the at least one processor is configured to:
• for each command sent from the remote control unit via the communications module, send a code unique to and associated with a pairing of the remote control unit to a first device controlled by the remote control unit, the code sent via a wireless medium different than a wireless medium over which the pairing occurs;
• pair with a second device in response to the second device receiving the code unique to and associated with a pairing of the remote control unit to the first device;
• unpair the remote control unit to the first device;
• and
• after unpairing the remote control unit to the first device, for each command sent from the remote control unit via the communications module, send a code unique to and associated with the pairing of the remote control unit to the second device.

A method, comprising:

• receiving, by at least one computer processor, a command from a remote control unit;
• determining, by at least one computer processor, whether the command is from a remote control unit currently paired with a device;
• determining, by at least one computer processor, whether to initiate pairing of the remote control unit to the device in response to the determination of whether the command is from a remote control unit currently paired with the device;
• and
• executing the command.
