## Abstract

A method to reduce bag rupture in a spray dispensed from a nozzle involves detecting one or more bags rupturing from an initial spray pattern of the spray dispensed from the nozzle, the one or more bags comprising a thin membraned semi-spherical protrusion extending from the spray, where the initial spray pattern is a region of the spray initially exiting the nozzle that forms a continuous sheet-like portion. The spray includes an agricultural spray including water, at least one polymer, and at least one perforation-aid type adjuvant. The agricultural spray exhibits fewer fine droplets exhibiting a diameter less than about 150 μm formed via the bag rupture approach to droplet formation.

## Claims

### Claim 1

A method of detecting bag rupture in a spray dispensed from a nozzle, the method comprising:
detecting one or more bags rupturing from an initial spray pattern of the spray dispensed from the nozzle, the one or more bags comprising a thin membraned semi-spherical protrusion extending from the spray, wherein the initial spray pattern is a region of the spray initially exiting the nozzle that forms a continuous sheet-like portion.

### Claim 2 (depends on 1)

The method of claim 1, further comprising the step of analyzing droplets formed by the one or more bags rupturing from the initial spray pattern.

### Claim 3 (depends on 2)

The method of claim 2, further comprising the step of quantifying an amount of fine droplets formed by the one or more bags rupturing from the initial spray pattern.

### Claim 4 (depends on 2)

The method of claim 2, further comprising the step of comparing the droplets formed by the one or more bags rupturing from the initial spray pattern to droplets formed by another spray.

### Claim 5 (depends on 1)

The method of claim 1, further comprising the step of detecting ligament structures extending from the initial spray pattern.

### Claim 6 (depends on 5)

The method of claim 5, further comprising the step of analyzing the ligament structures.

### Claim 7 (depends on 1)

The method of claim 1, further comprising the step of dispensing the spray from the nozzle in a direction that is perpendicular to the ground.

### Claim 8 (depends on 1)

The method of claim 1, further comprising the step of dispensing the spray from the nozzle in a vertical direction and exposing the spray to air flowing in a direction that is parallel to the ground.

### Claim 9 (depends on 1)

The method of claim 1, further comprising the step of exposing the spray to air flow such that the air flow intersects the sheet-like portion of the initial spray pattern at an oblique angle.

### Claim 10 (depends on 1)

The method of claim 1, wherein the spray detected comprises a rheology modifier, the rheology modifier comprising at least one of guar gum, modified guar gum, polyacrylamide, or lecithin.

### Claim 11

A test section for evaluating a spray, comprising
at least one nozzle disposed in an enclosure, the at least one nozzle configured to dispense a spray therefrom;
at least one stimulus source configured to emit a stimulus that illuminates at least an initial spray pattern of the spray dispensed from the nozzle, wherein the initial spray pattern is a region of the spray initially exiting the nozzle that forms a continuous sheet-like portion; and
a detector configured to detect one or more bags rupturing from the initial spray pattern of the spray, the one or more bags comprising a thin membraned semi-spherical protrusion extending from the spray.

### Claim 12 (depends on 11)

The test section of claim 11, wherein the at least one nozzle comprises a flat fan nozzle or a hollow-cone type nozzle.

### Claim 13 (depends on 11)

The test section of claim 11, wherein the at least one nozzle comprises an agricultural nozzle.

### Claim 14 (depends on 11)

The test section of claim 11, wherein the stimulus source comprises a pulsed light source.

### Claim 15 (depends on 14)

The test section of claim 14, wherein the pulsed light source comprises one or more of a pulsed laser, a pulsed LED, or a flash bulb.

### Claim 16 (depends on 11)

The test section of claim 11, wherein the stimulus source comprises a continuous light source.

### Claim 17 (depends on 16)

The test section of claim 16, wherein the continuous light source comprises one or more of an LED light source, a halogen light source, a mercury light source, or a xenon lamp.

### Claim 18 (depends on 11)

The test section of claim 11, wherein the stimulus source is configured to emit a collimated stimulus.

### Claim 19 (depends on 11)

The test section of claim 11, wherein the detector is configured to detect one or more of visible light, ultraviolet light or infrared light.

### Claim 20 (depends on 11)

The test section of claim 11, wherein the enclosure defines a portion of a wind tunnel.
