Abstract
An implantable knee prosthesis comprising a femoral stem component, a tibial stem component and a hinged joint having at least one hinge pivot point and an axis of limited rotation, the implantable knee prosthesis having a prosthetic extensor system configured to simulate a level of natural movement for patients with compromised extensor systems.
Claims20
An implantable knee prosthesis, comprising:
- a femoral component comprising a first joint portion and a first intermedullary stem portion, the first stem portion configured to be embedded in a femur;
- a tibial component comprising a second joint portion and a second intermedullary stem portion, the second stem portion configured to be embedded in a tibia associated with the femur;
- a flexion joint having a range of flexion of the tibia relative to the femur io comprising the first joint portion coupled with the second joint portion;
- and
- a prosthetic extensor mechanism operatively coupled to the flexion joint and configured to bias the implanted knee prosthesis to an extended position to simulate a level of natural knee movement for individuals with compromised extensor mechanisms.

An implantable knee prosthesis, comprising:
- a femoral component comprising a first joint portion and a first intermedullary stem portion, the first stem portion configured to be embedded in a femur;
- a tibial component comprising a second joint portion and a second intermedullary stem portion, the second stem portion configured to be embedded in a tibia operationally associated with the femur;
- a flexion joint having a range of flexion of the tibia relative to the femur comprising the first joint portion coupled with the second joint portion, the flexion joint also having a range of rotation between the femoral component and the tibial component;
- a prosthetic extensor mechanism operatively coupled to the flexion joint and configured to bias the implanted prosthetic knee joint to an extended position and to resist flexion to simulate a level of natural knee movement for individuals with compromised extensor mechanisms, the extensor mechanism comprising one or more of a spring system;
- a magnet system;
- a hydraulic system;
- or a pneumatic system;
- and
- a bio sheath encapsulating the flexion joint configured to separate moving portions of the flexion joint from surrounding tissue.
