A metal plate contains a shape memory alloy (e.g., a nitinol alloy) capable of exhibiting the one-way memory effect.

A plate comprising:
- a shape memory alloy capable of exhibiting the one-way shape memory effect.
A method for lengthening a plate comprising:
- heating comprising a one-way shape memory alloy to induce a shape change.
A scoliosis treatment method comprising:
- applying a first plate to a first vertebra to be straightened, the first plate comprising a one-way shape memory alloy;
- and
- heating the first plate, thereby forcing a lengthening of the first plate and a straightening of the first vertebra.
