Abstract
A surgical anvil assembly for use with a circular stapling instrument includes an anvil center rod defining a longitudinal axis and an anvil head pivotally coupled to the anvil center rod and movable between a first operative condition and a second tilted condition. The anvil assembly further includes a locking assembly configured to selectively lock the anvil head in each of the first and second conditions.

A surgical anvil assembly for use with a circular stapling instrument, comprising:
- an anvil head having a post;
- and
- a ring assembly configured for receipt in a recess of the anvil head and movable within the recess from a proximal position preventing pivotal movement of the anvil head to a distal position permitting pivotal movement of the anvil head, wherein the ring assembly includes:
- a snap collar configured to engage the post of the anvil head and to resist distal movement of the ring assembly out of the proximal position;
- and
- a cut ring disposed with the snap collar, wherein the snap collar is configured to slide along and relative to the post upon receiving a distally-oriented threshold force to allow the ring assembly to move toward the distal position.
A ring assembly configured for slidable receipt in an anvil head of a circular stapling instrument, the ring assembly comprising:
- a snap collar configured to engage the anvil head to resist movement of the ring assembly in a distal direction;
- a backup member disposed with the snap collar;
- and
- a cut ring captured between the snap collar and the backup member, wherein the snap collar includes an inner lip extending radially inward to engage the anvil head to resist movement of the ring assembly in the distal direction.
