Abstract
This invention relates to optical methods and optical systems for making both on-axis and wide-field, peripheral off-axis wavefront measurements of an eye; and for designing and manufacturing wavefront-guided customized contact lens useful for myopia control. The wide-field optical instrument can comprise either (1) a multi-axis optical configuration using multiple off-axis beamlets, or (2) an instrument comprising a rotatable scanning mirror that generates off-axis probe beams.
Claims22
A multi-axis optical instrument, for measuring both on-axis and off-axis properties of an eye of a patient when looking into the instrument, comprising:
- (a) a single on-axis beamlet coincident with a main on-axis optical path, comprising a probe beam source, a beamsplitter, a front lens, a rear lens, and a wavefront sensor;
- and
- (b) a plurality of off-axis beamlets pointing toward the eye and configured in a fan shape;
- wherein each off-axis beamlet comprises its own:
- probe beam source, beamsplitter, front lens, rear lens, and wavefront sensor.
A method comprising:
- (a) measuring an eye's aberrations along a main optical path with a wide-field optical instrument, (b) measuring an eye's aberrations along one or more off-axis optical paths with the wide-field optical instrument, and (c) using the measured aberrations to design a customized correction means that controls myopia progression.
A wide-field scanning optical instrument for measuring both on-axis and off-axis optical properties of a patient's eye (including aberrations), comprising:
- (a) a main optical axis, with the eye positioned at a near end of the instrument, and an eye imaging camera located at a far end of the instrument;
- (b) a large front lens located on the main optical axis, closest to the eye;
- (c) a first beamsplitter positioned on the main optical axis, and located after the front lens, for directing light towards a wavefront sensor located at a far end of the instrument;
- (d) a second beamsplitter located on the main optical axis, located after the first beamsplitter, for directing light from a video fixation target to the eye;
- (e) a rear lens, located after the second beamsplitter;
- (f) an eye imaging camera located after the rear lens;
- (g) a range limiting aperture (RLA);
- (h) a third lens;
- (i) a third beamsplitter;
- (j) a wavefront sensor;
- (k) a scanning mirror;
- and
- (l) a probe beam source;
- wherein the RLA is located in-between the first beamsplitter and the third lens;
- wherein the third lens is located in-between the RLA and the third beamsplitter;
- wherein the third beamsplitter is located in-between the third lens and the wavefront sensor;
- and
- wherein the probe beam source generates a probe beam that is directed towards the scanning mirror, which redirects the probe beam towards the third beamsplitter, which then redirects the probe beam through the third lens and the RLA, and onto the first beamsplitter, which then redirects the beam through the front lens onto the eye at an off-axis angle to the main optical path.
