Abstract
An apparatus that relies on patterned metasurfaces to reduce speckle when illuminating an object with coherent light. The metasurfaces serve to increase one or more of angle diversity and wavelength diversity resulting from illumination by a coherent source.
Claims42
An apparatus comprising an illumination system for illuminating an object, said illumination system comprising an illumination source, a coupler, a light bar, and a patterned metasurface, wherein said coupler couples light from said illumination source into said light bar, wherein, after having undergone total internal reflection within said light bar and after having interacted with said patterned metasurface, said light exits said light bar and propagates toward said object.
An apparatus comprising an illumination system for illuminating an object, said illumination system comprising a VCSEL array having a design wavelength for output light, wherein said VCSEL array comprises lasers and a patterned metasurface, wherein said patterned metasurface causes variations in output wavelengths of said each of said lasers from said design wavelength, whereby said lasers output light at different wavelengths.
An apparatus comprising an illumination system for illuminating an object, said illumination system comprising a VCSEL array and a replicating layer, wherein said array comprises a plurality of sources, each source being a VCSEL, wherein said sources emit light at different wavelengths, wherein said replicating layer is disposed above said array, wherein said replicating layer forms a plurality of synthetic sources for each source, said synthetic sources being incoherent relative to each other.
An apparatus comprising a diffuser, said diffuser comprising a plurality of patches, each of which comprises a metasurface, wherein each metasurface comprises nanostructures embedded in a medium, where said nanostructures have a refractive index that is greater than that of said medium, and wherein each metasurface carries out a different optical function.
