## Abstract

The present disclosure relates to a communication method and system for converging a 5th-Generation (5G) communication system for supporting higher data rates beyond a 4th-Generation (4G) system with a technology for Internet of Things (IoT). The present disclosure may be applied to intelligent services based on the 5G communication technology and the IoT-related technology, such as smart home, smart building, smart city, smart car, connected car, health care, digital education, smart retail, security and safety services. There is disclosed a method, for a first network entity, for informing a change in coverage enhancement usage in a network comprising the first network entity and a user equipment (UE). The method comprises, in response to determining that a restriction on the use of coverage enhancement has changed for the UE, transmitting, to the UE, a first message including an indication of the change.

## Claims

### Claim 1

A method, for a first network entity, for informing a change in coverage enhancement usage in a network comprising the first network entity and a user equipment (UE), the method comprising:
identifying that a restriction on use of coverage enhancement has changed for the UE; and
in response to identifying that the restriction on the use of coverage enhancement has changed for the UE, transmitting, to the UE, a first message including an indication of the change.

### Claim 2 (depends on 1)

The method of claim 1, further comprising, if the UE is in an idle mode, initiating a procedure for transitioning the UE to a connected mode before transmitting the first message.

### Claim 3 (depends on 2)

The method of claim 2, wherein initiating the procedure comprises at least one of:
transmitting a paging message to the UE, via a radio access network (RAN) entity in the network or
transmitting a notification message via non-3GPP access or non-3GPP interWorking function.

### Claim 4 (depends on 1)

The method of claim 1, further comprising:
receiving, from the UE, a registration request message; and
in response to the registration request message, transmitting, to the UE, a registration accept message,
wherein the registration request message comprises an indication of support, by the UE, for restriction on use of enhanced coverage, and
wherein the registration accept message comprises an indication of a current restriction on the use of coverage enhancement for the UE.

### Claim 5 (depends on 1)

The method of claim 1, further comprising performing a configuration based on a current restriction on the use of coverage enhancement for the UE, and
wherein the configuration comprises applying a timer value.

### Claim 6 (depends on 1)

The method of claim 1, further comprising transmitting, to a second network entity in the network that has an established protocol data unit (PDU) session with the UE, a second message comprising an indication of a current restriction on the use of coverage enhancement for the UE,
wherein the second message comprises a message for initiating a PDU session modification procedure, and
wherein the second network entity comprises a session management function (SMF) entity.

### Claim 7 (depends on 1)

The method of claim 1, further comprising receiving, from the UE, a configuration update complete message in response to a configuration update command,
wherein the first message comprises the configuration update command (CUC) including an UpdateCE field for indicating a change in a restriction on the use of coverage enhancement.

### Claim 8 (depends on 1)

The method of claim 1, wherein the first network entity comprises an access and mobility management function (AMF) entity.

### Claim 9

A method, for a user equipment (UE), for informing a change in coverage enhancement usage in a network comprising a first network entity and the UE, the method comprising:
receiving, from the first network entity, a first message including an indication of a change in a restriction on use of coverage enhancement for the UE, and
in response to the first message, initiating a registration procedure based on the indication.

### Claim 10 (depends on 9)

The method of claim 9, wherein initiating the registration procedure comprises:
transmitting, to the first network entity, a registration request message; and
receiving, from the first network entity, in response to the registration request message, a registration accept message,
wherein the registration request message comprises an indication of support, by the UE, for restriction on use of enhanced coverage, and
wherein the registration accept message comprises an indication of a current restriction on the use of coverage enhancement for the UE.

### Claim 11

A method, for a user equipment (UE), for informing a change in coverage enhancement usage in a network comprising a first network entity and the UE, the method comprising:
receiving, from the first network entity, a first message including an indication of a change in a restriction on use of coverage enhancement for the UE, and
in response to the first message, changing a current use of coverage enhancement usage based on a type of use of coverage enhancement applied at the time the first message is received.

### Claim 12 (depends on 11)

The method of claim 11, wherein changing the current use of coverage enhancement usage comprises at least one of:
if a first type of use of coverage enhancement in which the use of enhanced coverage is not restricted is applied at the time the first message is received, changing to a second type of use of coverage enhancement in which the use of enhanced coverage is restricted; or
if the second type of use of coverage enhancement in which the use of enhanced coverage is restricted is applied at the time the first message is received, changing to the first type of use of coverage enhancement in which the use of enhanced coverage is not restricted.

### Claim 13 (depends on 11)

The method of claim 11, further comprising performing a configuration based on a current restriction on the use of coverage enhancement for the UE, and
wherein the configuration comprises applying a timer value.

### Claim 14

A first network entity in a network comprising the first network entity and a user equipment (UE), the first network entity comprising:
a transmitter; and
