## Abstract

A test instrument for providing an optics troubleshooting technique of an optical transceiver is disclosed. The test instrument may comprise a processor and a memory, which when executed by the processor, performs the optics troubleshooting technique. The optics troubleshooting technique may include identifying a test signal from the optical transceiver. The optics troubleshooting technique may include determining signal power associated with the signal. The optics troubleshooting technique may further include applying one or more expert mode settings. In some examples, the one or more expert mode settings may be applied in a predefined order until an acceptable BER result is achieved over a predefined test period. In this way, test instrument may determine which of the one or more expert mode settings is responsible for the acceptable BER result.

## Claims

### Claim at position 1

1-20. (canceled)

### Claim 21

A test instrument, comprising:
a processor; and
a memory, which when executed by the processor, performs an optics troubleshooting technique associated with an optical transceiver, as follows:
determine signal power associated with a signal from an optical transceiver;
apply one or more expert mode settings in a predefined order until an acceptable bit error rate (BER) result is achieved over a predefined test period; and
determine which of the one or more expert mode settings is responsible for the acceptable BER result based on a rollback technique of at least some of the applied one or more expert mode settings.

### Claim 22 (depends on 21)

The test instrument of claim 21, wherein the test signal is based on a pseudorandom binary sequence (PRBS) pattern.

### Claim 23 (depends on 21)

The test instrument of claim 21, wherein the optical transceiver is a pluggable to the test instrument via a port, the optical transceiver comprising at least one of the following types: C Form Factor Pluggable (CFP1/CFP2/CFP4), Quad Small Form Factor Pluggable (QSFP+/QSFP28+/QSFP56/QSFP-DD); and Small Form Factor Pluggable (SFP+/SFP28/SFP56/SFP-DD).

### Claim 24 (depends on 21)

The test instrument of claim 21, wherein the one or more expert mode settings comprise at least one of the following:
ignore LOS (lack or loss of signal);
application rate select;
receiver equalization;
CDR (clock and data recovery) bypass; and
high power mode.

### Claim 25 (depends on 21)

The test instrument of claim 21, wherein the predefined order is based on historical data associated with the optical transceiver or similar troubleshooting tests associated with an optical transceiver type or family stored in the memory.

### Claim 26 (depends on 21)

The test instrument of claim 21, wherein the predefined order is based on user input.

### Claim 27 (depends on 21)

The test instrument of claim 21, wherein the predefined test period is based on user input or system-generated recommendation based on historical data stored in the memory.

### Claim 28 (depends on 21)

The test instrument of claim 21, wherein the acceptable BER result is based on user input or system-generated BER result associated with the optical transceiver based on historical data stored in the memory.

### Claim 29 (depends on 21)

The test instrument of claim 21, wherein determining which of the one or more expert mode settings is responsible for the acceptable BER result comprises:
performing the rollback technique of at least some of the applied one or more expert mode settings, except for the most recently applied expert mode setting, to determine one particular expert mode setting, by itself, is responsible for the acceptable BER result.

### Claim 30 (depends on 21)

The test instrument of claim 21, wherein the optics troubleshooting technique is a self-diagnostic optics troubleshooting technique performed by the processor that comprises:
generating and outputting a report comprising results of the self-diagnostic optics troubleshooting technique to a user via a display screen.

### Claim 31

A method for performing an optics troubleshooting technique of an optical transceiver, the method comprising:
determining signal power associated with a signal from an optical transceiver;
applying one or more expert mode settings in a predefined order until an acceptable bit error rate (BER) result is achieved over a predefined test period; and
determining which of the one or more expert mode settings is responsible for the acceptable BER result based on a rollback technique of at least some of the applied one or more expert mode settings.

### Claim 32 (depends on 31)

The method of claim 31, wherein the signal is based on a pseudorandom binary sequence (PRBS) pattern.

### Claim 33 (depends on 31)

The method of claim 31, wherein the optical transceiver is a pluggable to the test instrument via a port, the optical transceiver comprising at least one of the following types: C Form Factor Pluggable (CFP1/CFP2/CFP4), Quad Small Form Factor Pluggable (QSFP+/QSFP28+/QSFP56/QSFP-DD); and Small Form Factor Pluggable (SFP+/SFP28/SFP56/SFP-DD).

### Claim 34 (depends on 31)
