Abstract
An earth formation traversed by a borehole is investigated. A borehole tool having a neutron source and a photon detector is located in the borehole and used to obtain photon scatter information in or about the borehole. A chemical element located in a region in or about the borehole is quantified by using the photon scatter information and at least two different spectral standards for that element.
Claims23
A method for investigating an earth formation traversed by a borehole, comprising:
- locating a borehole tool having a neutron source and a photon detector in the borehole and obtaining photon scatter information from at least two different regions in or about the borehole;
- and
- quantifying a concentration of a chemical element located in at least one of the at least two different regions in or about the borehole by using the photon scatter information and at least two different spectral standards for that element specific for each of the at least two different regions.
A method of investigating a geological formation traversed by a wellbore, comprising:
- placing a downhole tool having a neutron source into the wellbore in the geological formation;
- emitting neutrons from the neutron source to cause reactions in and about the wellbore that generate photons;
- detecting spectra of the photons using the downhole tool;
- analyzing the detected spectra using at least two standards for at least one element to quantify the concentration of that element in at least one specific region in or about the wellbore;
- and
- determining a property of at least one specific region.
