Joint modeling of object population estimation using sensor data and distributed device data

A system comprising:

• a storage subsystem to store sensor data collected for areas of interest (AOI);
• an object count sensor data analyzer configured to determine a count of unique objects located in an AOI based on sensor data received from the storage system for the AOI;
• a population estimation system configured to:
• receive a request to estimate a population for a target AOI;
• access a number of reported units at the target AOI, wherein the number of reported units is determined based on reported device usage data for the target AOI;
• for a plurality of similar AOIs, access a count of unique objects located at each similar AOI from the object count sensor data analyzer, the similar AOI having measurable characteristics that are within a range of similarity with corresponding measurable characteristics of the target AOI;
• and
• generate an estimate of a population at the target AOI based on the number of reported units at the target AOI and the count of unique objects located at each similar AOI.

A non-transitory computer readable storage medium, storing computer-readable instructions, that when executed by one or more processors of a computing system, causes the one or more processors to:

• receive a request to estimate a population for a target AOI;
• access a number of reported units at the target AOI, wherein the number of reported units is determined based on reported device usage data for the target AOI;
• for a plurality of similar AOIs, access a count of unique objects located at each similar AOI, wherein the number of unique objects is determined based on sensor data collected for the similar AOI and the similar AOI has characteristics that are within a range of similarity with corresponding measurable characteristics of the target AOI;
• and
• generate an estimate of a population at the target AOI based on the number of reported units at the target AOI and the count of unique objects located at each similar AOI.

A method comprising:

• receiving a request to estimate a population for a target AOI;
• accessing a number of reported at the target AOI, wherein the number of reported units is determined based on reported device usage data for the target AOI;
• for a plurality of similar AOIs, accessing a count of unique objects located at each similar AOI, wherein the count of unique objects is determined based on sensor data collected for the similar AOI and the similar AOI has characteristics that are within a range of similarity with corresponding measurable characteristics of the target AOI;
• and
• generating an estimate of a population at the target AOI based on the number of reported units at the target AOI and the count of unique objects located at each similar AOI.
