Abstract
A method according to embodiments of the invention includes, for a field of view comprising a plurality of portions, determining an amount of light for each portion. LEDs corresponding to each portion are selectively energized over a plurality of time periods, such that a sum of illumination generated by each LED during the plurality of time periods equals the determined amount of light. An image of the field of view is captured, for example by a camera.
Claims20
An illumination system, comprising:
- a light-emitting diode (LED) array including a plurality of LEDs arranged in a plurality of rows and a plurality of columns,
- each LED of the LED array being located in unique combination of row and column,
- each LED of the LED array being powerable via a corresponding first electrical terminal and a corresponding second electrical terminal, the first and second electrical terminals including an anode and a cathode,
- each row of LEDs having the corresponding first electrical terminals being electrically connected to one another and to a corresponding row switch,
- each column of LEDs having the corresponding second electrical terminals being electrically connected to one another and to a corresponding column switch;
- and
- a driver electrically coupled to the row switches and the column switches,
- each LED in the LED array being electrically powered only when the corresponding row switch is closed and the corresponding column switch is closed,
- the driver configured to selectively open and close the row switches and the column switches to selectively power the LEDs in the LED array.
The illumination system of claim 21, further comprising a processor configured to:
- receive an illuminance signal that represents an illuminance pattern;
- and
- provide to the driver a driver signal that specifies times at which the row switches and the column switches are opened or closed to produce the illuminance pattern with the LED array.
A method for providing illumination, the method comprising:
- providing a rectangular light-emitting diode (LED) array including a plurality of LEDs arranged in a plurality of rows and a plurality of columns, each LED of the LED array being located in unique combination of row and column, each LED of the LED array being powerable via a corresponding first electrical terminal and a corresponding second electrical terminal, the first and second electrical terminals including an anode and a cathode, each row of LEDs having the corresponding first electrical terminals being electrically connected to one another and to a corresponding row switch, each column of LEDs having the corresponding second electrical terminals being electrically connected to one another and to a corresponding column switch;
- and
- with a driver electrically coupled to the row switches and the column switches such that each LED in the LED array is electrically powered only when the corresponding row switch is closed and the corresponding column switch is closed, selectively opening and closing the row switches and the column switches to selectively power the LEDs in the LED array.
The method of claim 23, further comprising, over a specified time duration:
- supplying, with the driver, a fixed amount of current to the row switches and the column switches;
- controlling, with the driver, times at which the row switches and the column switches are opened and closed;
- and
- splitting the fixed amount of current evenly among LEDs for which the corresponding row switches and corresponding column switches are closed.
An illumination system, comprising:
- a rectangular light-emitting diode (LED) array including a plurality of LEDs arranged in a plurality of rows and a plurality of columns,
- each LED of the LED array being located in unique combination of row and column,
- each LED of the LED array being powerable via a corresponding first electrical terminal and a corresponding second electrical terminal, the first and second electrical terminals including an anode and a cathode,
- each row of LEDs having the corresponding first electrical terminals being electrically connected to one another and to a corresponding row switch,
- each column of LEDs having the corresponding second electrical terminals being electrically connected to one another and to a corresponding column switch;
- a driver electrically coupled to the row switches and the column switches,
- each LED in the LED array being electrically powered only when the corresponding row switch is closed and the corresponding column switch is closed,
- the driver configured to selectively open and close the row switches and the column switches to selectively power the LEDs in the LED array;
- and
- a processor configured to:
- receive an illuminance signal that represents an illuminance pattern;
- and
- provide to the driver a driver signal that directs the driver to open or close specified row switches and specified column switches at specified times to produce the illuminance pattern with the LED array.
