Abstract
The invention relates to an efficient process for the preparation of isoolefin polymers such as polyisobutene or butyl rubber by polymerization of a liquid medium comprising the monomer(s) and ethane or carbon dioxide that is substantially dissolved therein.
Claims20
A process for the preparation of isoolefin polymers, the process comprising at least the steps of:
- a) providing a reaction medium comprising an organic diluent and at least one monomer being an isoolefin and ethane or carbon dioxide that is substantially dissolved in the reaction medium, and;
- b) polymerizing the at least one monomer within the reaction medium in the presence of an initiator system to form a product medium comprising a copolymer, the organic diluent and optionally residual monomers whereby the ethane or the carbon dioxide of the reaction medium is at least partially evaporated.
