• The method for controlling the internal combustion engine according to claim 1, further comprising temporarily controlling a variable valve mechanism to a control position at which volumetric efficiency deteriorates, the variable valve mechanism which is capable of changing at least one of an opening and closing timing and a lift amount of an intake valve.

• The method for controlling the internal combustion engine according to claim 1, wherein when the lean combustion mode is shifted to the stoichiometric combustion mode, ignition timing retard is carried out.
