## Abstract

Transitioning between a high-resolution input mode, such as a mouse-based interface, and a low-resolution input mode, such as a touch-based interface, is described. A change of orientation of a touch screen between a first orientation and a second orientation is detected. Transitioning between the two input modes and corresponding user interfaces (UIs) is based on the detected change of orientation. A change of orientation can be detected with one or more sensors, such as an accelerometer, position sensors, etc. Transitioning from one mode to another can include modifying an item displayed in the UI of the one mode into a corresponding item displayed in the UI of the other mode. The modifying can include enlarging/reducing, obscuring/unobscuring, moving, etc. For example, an item can be obscured by the visual effect of sliding it off of the screen.

## Claims

### Claim 1

(canceled)

### Claim 2

A method, comprising:
at an electronic device in communication with a display screen and one or more input devices:
while displaying, via the display screen, a user interface including a respective user interface item, detecting that one or more criteria are satisfied, including a criterion that is satisfied based on a current input mode of the electronic device; and
in response to detecting that the one or more criteria are satisfied:
ceasing to display the respective user interface item via the display screen, including displaying an animation of the respective user interface item moving off of the display screen.

### Claim 3 (depends on 2)

The method of claim 2, wherein the one or more criteria include a respective criterion that is satisfied based on an input device being used in the current input mode of the electronic device.

### Claim 4 (depends on 2)

The method of claim 2, wherein the respective criterion is satisfied based on whether or not the electronic device is configured to receive keyboard input in the current input mode of the electronic device.

### Claim 5 (depends on 2)

The method of claim 2, wherein displaying the animation of the respective user interface item moving off of the display screen includes displaying an animation of the respective user interface item sliding off a respective edge of the display screen.

### Claim 6 (depends on 5)

The method of claim 5, wherein displaying the user interface including the respective user interface item before detecting that the one or more criteria are satisfied includes displaying the respective user interface item at the respective edge of the display screen.

### Claim 7 (depends on 2)

The method of claim 2 further comprising:
while displaying the user interface including the respective user interface item, displaying, in the user interface, a second user interface item at a first size; and
in response to detecting that the one or more criteria are satisfied, displaying the second user interface item at a second size, larger than the first size.

### Claim 8 (depends on 2)

The method of claim 2, further comprising:
after ceasing to display the respective user interface item in response to detecting that the one or more criteria are satisfied, detecting that the one or more criteria cease to be satisfied; and
in response to detecting that the one or more criteria cease to be satisfied, initiating display of the respective user interface item including displaying a second animation of the respective user interface item sliding onto the display screen.

### Claim 9 (depends on 8)

The method of claim 8, wherein displaying the second animation of the respective user interface item sliding onto the display screen includes reversing the animation of the item moving off of the display screen.

### Claim 10 (depends on 8)

The method of claim 8, further comprising:
after ceasing to display the respective user interface item in response to detecting that the one or more criteria are satisfied and before detecting that the one or more criteria cease to be satisfied, displaying, in the user interface, a second user interface item at a first size; and
in response to detecting that the one or more criteria cease to be satisfied, displaying the second user interface item at a second size smaller than the first size.

### Claim 11 (depends on 2)

The method of claim 2, wherein the user interface is a content editing user interface.

### Claim 12 (depends on 2)

The method of claim 2, wherein the animation of the respective user interface item moving off of the display screen includes moving the respective user interface item off of a respective edge of the display screen, the method further comprising:
while displaying the user interface including the respective user interface item, displaying, in the user interface, a second user interface item adjacent to the respective user interface item; and
in response to detecting that the one or more criteria are satisfied, displaying, in the user interface, the second user interface item at the respective edge of the display screen.

### Claim 13 (depends on 12)

The method of claim 12, further comprising:
in response to detecting that the one or more criteria are satisfied, displaying an animation of the second user interface item moving to the respective edge of the display screen.

### Claim 14 (depends on 2)

The method of claim 2, wherein the respective user interface item is a selectable object.

### Claim 15

An electronic device comprising:
one or more processors;
a display screen; and
memory storing instructions, which when executed by the one or more processors, cause the one or more processors to perform a method comprising:
while displaying, via the display screen, a user interface including a respective user interface item, detecting that one or more criteria are satisfied, including a criterion that is satisfied based on a current input mode of the electronic device; and
in response to detecting that the one or more criteria are satisfied:
ceasing to display the respective user interface item via the display screen, including displaying an animation of the respective user interface item moving off of the display screen.

### Claim 16

A non-transitory computer readable storage medium including instructions, which when executed by one or more processors of an electronic device having a display screen, cause the electronic device to perform a method comprising:
while displaying, via the display screen, a user interface including a respective user interface item, detecting that one or more criteria are satisfied, including a criterion that is satisfied based on a current input mode of the electronic device; and
in response to detecting that the one or more criteria are satisfied:
ceasing to display the respective user interface item via the display screen, including displaying an animation of the respective user interface item moving off of the display screen.
