## Abstract

The present invention relates to a catalyst system which improves the work life of acid-catalyzed resole resins at higher ambient temperatures and provides extended shelf life. The catalyst system comprises an inorganic acid catalyst and one or more polyhydric alcohols. In particular, the present invention relates to a catalyst system wherein the inorganic acid and the alcohol do not convert to an ester when added to the resole resin.

## Claims

### Claim 1

A catalyst system for improving the cure time of acid-catalyzed resole resins at higher ambient temperatures which comprises an inorganic acid and one or more polyhydric alcohols.

### Claim 2 (depends on 1)

The catalyst system as claimed in claim 1, wherein the inorganic acid and polyhydric alcohol do not react to form an ester when added to the resole resin.

### Claim 3 (depends on 1)

The catalyst system as claimed in claim 1, wherein the inorganic acid is phosphoric acid.

### Claim 4 (depends on 1)

The catalyst system as claimed in claim 1, wherein the polyhydric alcohol is glycerol and/or glycol.

### Claim 5 (depends on 1)

The catalyst system as claimed in claim 1, which further comprises an amine.

### Claim 6 (depends on 5)

The catalyst system as claimed in claim 5, wherein the amine is morpholine.

### Claim 7 (depends on 1)

The catalyst system as claimed in claim 1, which further comprises a solvent.

### Claim 8 (depends on 7)

The catalyst system as claimed in claim 7, wherein the solvent is water or an aliphatic alcohol.

### Claim 9 (depends on 1)

The catalyst system as claimed in claim 1, which comprises phosphoric acid in a range of 20 to 70 wt %, glycol and/or glycerol in a range of 0 to 50 wt %, and water in a range of 0 to 35 wt %.

### Claim 10 (depends on 9)

The catalyst system as claimed in claim 9, wherein the weight percentage of phosphoric acid:glycol and/or glycerol:water is in a ratio of 50:20:30.

### Claim 11 (depends on 1)

A resole resin comprising the catalyst system as claimed in claim 1.

### Claim 12

A method for preparation of the resole resin comprising the steps of:
preparing a catalyst by mixing an inorganic acid and one or more polyhydric alcohols,
mixing a resole resin with the catalyst.

### Claim 13 (depends on 12)

The method as claimed in claim 12, wherein the catalyst is prepared by mixing phosphoric acid in a range of 20 to 70 wt %, glycol and/or glycerol in a range of 0 to 50 wt %, and water in a range of 0 to 35 wt %.

### Claim 14 (depends on 13)

The method as claimed in claim 13, wherein the weight percentage of phosphoric acid:glycol and/or glycerol:water is in a ratio of 50:20:30.
