Disclosed herein are gold compounds and methods of use thereof as antibacterials. Specifically exemplified are methods of treating a Mycobacterium infection by administering therapeutically effective amounts of the gold compounds.

An antimicrobial composition comprising a gold macrocycle or chelate compound or a pharmaceutically acceptable salt thereof, and optionally a pharmaceutically acceptable carrier.
A method of treating a subject infected with a Mycobacterium spp., the method comprising administering a therapeutically effective amount of a composition comprising one or more gold macrocycle and/or chelate compounds.
An article of manufacture comprising a gold complex compound 8, 10, 11, 14 or 15, or a pharmaceutically acceptable salt thereof, or a combination thereof, and a mechanism for delivering the gold macrocycle compound.
