Abstract
A method for modulating metabolism is provided which includes the step of providing a consumable composition including an extract containing a compound of Formula Ito a subject in need thereof thereby modulating the subject's metabolism and addressing the underlying pathogenesis of metabolic disorders, such as nonalcoholic fatty liver disease, nonalcoholic steatohepatitis and type II diabetes mellitus.

A method for modulating metabolism comprising:
- administering to a subject in need thereof a consumable composition comprising at least one carrier and an effective amount of an extract comprising a compound of Formula I, or an isomer, salt, homodimer, heterodimer, or conjugate thereof:
- wherein
- R1 is present or absent, and when present is a substituent on one or more ring atoms and is for each ring atom independently a hydroxy group, halo group, substituted or unsubstituted lower alkyl group, or substituted or unsubstituted lower alkoxy group;
- and
- the dashed bond is present or absent,
- thereby modulating the subject's metabolism.

A method of treating or preventing a disease or disorder in a subject, comprising:
- administering a therapeutically effective amount of a compound of Formula I, or a pharmaceutically acceptable salt, to a subject in need thereof,
- wherein
- R1 is present or absent, and when present is a substituent on one or more ring atoms and is for each ring atom independently a hydroxy group, halo group, substituted or unsubstituted lower alkyl group, or substituted or unsubstituted lower alkoxy group;
- and
- the dashed bond is present or absent,
- wherein the disease or disorder is associated with HNF4α.
